Finding a dance studio in Indianapolis means securing a second home where you can master your technique.
Indy’s surprisingly diverse dance scene supports toddlers needing a nurturing environment alongside busy professionals wanting to sweat it out after work.
I have explored the city to find the best spots to move, visiting massive training facilities on the north side and intimate, adult-focused lofts downtown. These top picks prioritize quality instruction and genuine community to help you find the right studio.

1. Dance Creations Academy

Website: https://www.dancecreationsacademy.com/
Address: 9257 Castlegate Dr
Contact: +1 317-900-9774 / [email protected]
Hours:
- Monday – Thursday: 4:30 PM–8:45 PM (Tue starts at 4:30)
- Saturday: 9:30 AM–12:30 PM
Dance Creations Academy proves that excellent training can thrive without a toxic competitive environment. If you are a parent concerned about dance and drama, this studio feels like a breath of fresh air.
What stands out most is their focus on life lessons. Students build confidence and empathy right alongside their pirouettes, which creates a more meaningful experience overall.
Plus, their curriculum includes community service, helping dancers see how their art can positively impact others. The training remains challenging and structured, yet the ultimate goal is to shape well-rounded individuals, not just collect trophies.
The main drawback is the location near 82nd Street, where evening traffic can be frustrating. Since class sizes are intentionally small to maintain quality, popular time slots may also have waitlists.

I love the community that DCA has created
I have danced at DCA for almost 10 years. There has never been a day at the studio where I haven’t felt supported and uplifted by the teachers and staff. I love the community that DCA has created. I have met some of my best friends through DCA. Everyday I am pushed to become a better dancer, human, and follower of God.

All of the teachers there are wonderful and professional
My daughters have both taken classes at this studio for several years. All of the teachers there are wonderful and professional. They focus not just on teaching strong technique, but also building character, spirit, and positive attitudes. My children love going to classes there each week. This studio has truly taught them about the joy of dance!

It can be intimidating to start dancing as an adult, especially when most studios cater to younger students. That is why this place feels so welcoming from the start.
Beginners and returning dancers alike can learn at their own pace without worrying about judgment.
I dropped into a beginner hip hop class and appreciated how supportive everyone was, even when I struggled with the choreography. The environment felt encouraging rather than competitive.
DanceWorks Indy also makes scheduling easy with flexible class cards and convenient drop-in options, which are perfect for busy professionals. While the downtown setting adds energy and charm, parking during peak hours can take some patience.
Keep in mind that the studio focuses exclusively on adults, so it is not ideal if you are hoping to coordinate lessons for your kids at the same time.

Margo’s class is just so fun and knowledgeable
My first time in DanceWorks last night for Margo’s beginners contemporary dance. I LOVED IT!!! I received a warm welcome and tour. Margo’s class was both easy to understand and follow and challenging, my legs are feeling it. All the other students were so kind. I received a welcome gift bag on my way home. I look forward to exploring different classes and returning to Margo’s class, she’s just so fun and knowledgeable.

Great job, DanceWorks and DJ!
I went to a beginner’s hip hop class taught by DJ. It was my first time going to a dance class of this sort in my adult life, and I had a blast! I greatly appreciated the amount of stretching at the beginning, and appreciated the pacing and structure that choreographic instruction took. DJ is a fantastic teacher, giving ample opportunity for clarification and questions. Great job, DanceWorks and DJ!!!

Address: 9401 N Meridian St

- Saturday: 8:30 AM–4:30 PM
Some studios feel casual and community-based, but this one operates on a completely different level. From the moment you walk in, it feels more like a collegiate training facility than a typical neighborhood dance school.
Families who want professional sprung floors, structured programs, and serious technical development will immediately notice the difference.
At Indy Dance Academy, the range of options is especially impressive. Recreational dancers and pre-professional students train under the same roof, and both receive strong, focused instruction.
The faculty brings real industry experience, which adds credibility to every class.
An added perk is their comfortable lounge space that makes long rehearsal days easier to manage.
Keep in mind that traffic near the Meridian corridor can slow down your commute, and competitive team expenses can increase quickly with tuition, costumes, and performance fees.
4. The Dance Refinery

Website: http://www.thedancerefinery.com/
Address: 8335 Shelby St
Contact: +1 317-881-1905 / [email protected]
Hours:
- Monday – Thursday: 4 PM–9 PM
- Friday: 4 PM–7 PM
- Saturday: 9 AM–3 PM
Finding one place that covers both dance and gymnastics can make life so much easier for busy families. The Dance Refinery brings everything together under one roof, giving kids the chance to grow as well-rounded performers.
The space is expansive, with professional dance studios alongside a full gymnastics gym complete with foam pits, so students can build strength and flexibility while refining technique.
Convenience is also part of the appeal in this facility. Parents appreciate the on-site boutique, which makes it easy to grab tights or gear without an extra trip across town.
However, with such a large operation comes a busier atmosphere. Class changes can make the lobby feel hectic, and the overall vibe may seem less personal than smaller studios.
Competitive families should also plan ahead financially, as team fees and related costs can add up quickly.

Great staff and coaches
My girls go here and it’s absolutely fabulous. Great staff and coaches. Both of my daughters are in teams for gymnastics. They love it and look forward to coming to class every week. We are there 4x/week. My youngest is in dance as well and we love to participate in the recital. Great place to grow and learn.

Fantastic teachers, coaches, and staff
Fantastic teachers, coaches, and staff. We love the all-boys program… my son can do what he loves and be surrounded by other boys who enjoy dance, too! Kevin, Efren, and Peter are wonderful and have done so much for my son’s confidence. The investment at TDR has been worth every penny!

5. Indianapolis Movement Arts Collective

Website: https://www.indymovementarts.org/
Address: 4011 N Pennsylvania St,
Contact: Via website
Hours: See website for different class schedules
Indianapolis Movement Arts Collective provides a refreshing space where dance meets art and wellness. Rather than emphasizing competition, the studio promotes modern and somatic movement that feels both expressive and restorative.
The atmosphere is welcoming and intentionally inclusive, with sliding scale pricing that helps remove financial barriers for many participants.
Another highlight is the variety of thoughtful workshops, including programs designed specifically for older adults who want to keep moving with confidence and grace.
The overall focus is on creativity and personal growth rather than polishing recital routines. That said, dancers seeking strict ballet drills or commercial hip hop classes may not find what they are looking for here.
Since the studio operates as a collective, the class schedule can shift more often, so checking the calendar regularly is important.
