1. Crimson Tate

Website: https://www.crimsontate.com/
Address: 845 Massachusetts Avenue Suite A
Contact: (317) 426-3300
Hours: Monday to Sunday 11a-4p
Stepping into a colorful world of contemporary textiles is refreshing for any modern quilter. Designed around non-traditional patterns and repurposed vintage aesthetics, Crimson Tate offers a highly curated selection you will not find in big-box chains.
The founder, Heather Givans, designs many of the fabrics herself. This brings an authentic and creative authority to the store.
I actually picked up some of her quirky, limited-edition cottons for a recent throw pillow project, and the material quality was fantastic.
The staff here are incredibly knowledgeable and eager to help visual learners tackle complex sewing patterns.
However, navigating the shop can be a bit overwhelming since the physical space is quite small and densely packed.
You also have to deal with paid downtown parking, which adds a minor inconvenience to an otherwise stellar visit.
Love the selection of modern fabrics
Small shop packed with flair. Fantastic employees are very welcoming and helpful. Love the selection of modern fabrics by shop owner Heather Givans for Windham Fabrics. They also have a lot of Cotton + Steel (my favorite) and they also have Liberty fabrics! It may be small, but it has all the fabric you neeeeed to buy, plus notions, patterns, and thread.

So friendly and helpful
I’ve purchased from this shop online but today I got to go in person. What a treat! The staff were so friendly and helpful. The fabric collection is deliciously curated. It’s located in a fun neighborhood too. I purchased fabric from some of my favorite designers and discovered one that was new to me. I recommend them to anyone, in person or online.

2. The French Seam

Website: https://www.thefrenchseam.com/
Address: 9335 Castlegate Drive
Contact: (317) 841-1810
Hours: Tuesday to Saturday 11:00am to 4:00pm
Sourcing high-end materials for fashion-forward garments requires a specialty destination rather than a general craft retailer.
Operating as a fine fabric boutique, The French Seam specializes in premium apparel-grade textiles and modern quilting cottons.
They carry gorgeous natural fiber materials imported from Europe and Japan, alongside independent sewing patterns from niche brands like Grainline and Cashmerette. The inventory rotates constantly to keep the selection fresh and exclusive.
While the staff that assisted me during my visit was more than welcoming, some visitors have encountered a less-than-good experience. I’ve heard complaints about some staff being less than welcoming to newcomers.
The boutique itself is also quite small, which naturally limits the breadth of inventory available on any given day.
Very kind and helpful
I absolutely love this small business. The staff is very kind and helpful. I am a beginner quilter so my patterns are simple but because of the beautiful fabric selection it makes my project extra special. This quilt is a baby quilt made and the quilt top is made from fabrics I found at The French Seam.

Great price
Cute little shop! Their fabric selection was nice for quilting or fashion. Not a huge selection of pre-cuts, but there were plenty of fat quarters ready to go. I saw mostly modern patterns, but I definitely didn’t look at all of them. They also had supplies for hand embroidery and knitting. I’d love to see some cross stitch as well! I grabbed some remnants at a great price. I’ll be back!
3. Quilt Quarters

Website: https://sewvacauthority.com/
Address: 9504 Haver Way
Contact: 317-757-8340
Hours: Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Saturday 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Functioning as a true one-stop destination, Quilt Quarters houses over six thousand bolts of traditional, modern, and seasonal prints within a sprawling showroom. This makes it easy to find the exact fabric match for your project.
This setup eliminates the hassle of visiting multiple locations, as they also sell and repair major sewing machine brands like Bernina and Brother.
The sheer scale of their bright, organized layout allows customers to comfortably visualize complete sewing workstations.
When my friend needed an urgent repair on her older Janome machine, the experienced technicians here handled it swiftly while we browsed the aisles.
The main drawback is that the pricing tends to lean higher than average for similar basic materials. Budget-conscious shoppers might find the cost slightly prohibitive for larger, everyday projects.
The staff was totally awesome and selection was quite extensive.
What a fun experience today visiting this quilt store. I am from Texas and have access to a lot of quilt stores. The staff was totally awesome and selection was quite extensive. Needless to say, I did leave with a beautiful selection of fabric for a new project. Definitely will return when I am in the area again!

fabric choices are are incredible
I recently found this wonderful quilting, fabric, sewing machine and lessons store located on the north side of Indianapolis. I felt like a kid in a candy store. I took in my Bernina sewing machine for repairs and the staff took great care of me. They engaged with me and asked all the questions For anyone these days to take interest in the people that take the time to walk through their doors is very important in the world. Oh – and the fabric choices are are incredible. Thanks Quilt Quarters – it was worth the drive from Muncie to see you..

4. Calico

Website: https://www.calicoindy.com/
Address: 5128 East 82nd St.
Contact: (317) 595-7400
Hours: Monday to Friday 10 AM-6 PM, Saturday 10 AM-5 PM
Upgrading your living space often requires specialized guidance alongside premium materials. Blending a massive retail inventory with a full-service interior design studio, Calico provides in-home consultations and turnkey décor solutions.
They stock over ten thousand designer fabrics from luxury brands like Schumacher and Kravet, making high-end interior styling accessible to local homeowners.
The multi-generational family operation focuses heavily on building long-term relationships through personalized, one-on-one design support.
You can seamlessly coordinate upholstery, window treatments, and custom furniture directly through their in-house experts.
But because they strictly focus on interior design projects, their product range is notably narrow. Casual hobbyists looking for basic apparel or quilting cottons will not find suitable materials here.
The store was wonderful
Vary friendly and helpful on the phone even sending pictures. Then the visit to the store was wonderful. Waiting on sample in mail but will likely order and tell in love with fabric on sale for an unexpected project! Highly recommend!

Very helpful with the selection of fabric
I recently took several cushions from our sunroom furniture to Calico for recovering. Parge was very helpful with the selection of fabric and I was very satisfied with the entire process and the workmanship. Highly recommended!

5. Mayer Fabrics

Website: https://www.mayerfabrics.com/
Address: 500 S. Kitley Ave
Contact: 317.267.2626
Hours: Monday to Friday 8:30AM-5:30PM
Drawing on over a century of textile expertise, Mayer Fabrics specializes in contract-grade performance textiles made from exceptionally durable materials that standard retail stores cannot offer.
I found the fabrics they have are especially good for the hospitality, healthcare, and education sectors.
They maintain a strong commitment to sustainability by offering certified low-emission options and recycled product lines, with many items manufactured right here in the United States.
This innovative approach ensures architects and commercial designers have access to modern, environmentally responsible materials.
Buying from a commercial supplier does come with strict administrative hurdles, though. Their return policies are quite rigid, often including restocking fees or outright refusing small cut returns.
Their warranty also specifically excludes colorfastness.
An amazing up to date product
As a Manufacturer we couldn’t ask for a better textile supplier.
They really know their business and have an amazing up to date product
line to cover any type of environment.

A great experience
I called Mayer Fabrics today looking to find an item locally. I knew they were a wholesaler and likely didn’t have what I needed.
While they did have what I needed for my upholstery job it was in much too large of a quantity. BUT – They did proactively suggest an individual upholster local to Indianapolis that I might be able to contact to buy the item I needed in a smaller quantity.
Really appreciate this focus on a potential customer and a great experience, trying to help even though they couldn’t sell me something. Thank you!!!
