Best Math Tutor in Indianapolis: Top 5 Picks for Academic Success

We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

Teaching Methodology: Programs should adapt to the student's learning style rather than forcing a one-size-fits-all approach.

Tutor Qualifications: Staff credentials matter, so we checked if your child works with a certified teacher or a peer tutor.

Flexibility and Convenience: Scheduling ease is key, including options for online learning or in-home visits.

Progress Tracking: Services providing clear, data-driven updates took priority so parents aren't left guessing about improvement.

Subject Specialization: We checked if the center offers specialized support for needs like test prep, ADHD, or executive functioning skills.

Seeing your child struggle with math is tough. Tears over algebra homework and the panic of upcoming SATs create a unique kind of second-hand stress for parents.

You want to help, but “new math” often looks nothing like what we learned in school. Finding the right support shouldn’t add to your headache.

You need a partner who can translate confusion into confidence. I’ve analyzed the local scene to find options that support visual thinkers, test-takers, and students who need a confidence boost.

Here is my guide to the best math tutors in Indianapolis to get those grades back on track.

How much does a Math Tutor cost in Indianapolis?

Pricing for academic support varies, much like the difference between a quick oil change and a full engine overhaul. In Indianapolis, expect to spend anywhere from $20 to over $80 per hour.

For a standard session with a college student or a general tutor, you might pay around $21 to $25 per hour. However, rates climb if your high schooler needs highly specialized help for AP Calculus or intense SAT prep.

Some centers operate on a monthly tuition model rather than an hourly rate. This structure can be easier for budgeting but often requires a longer commitment.

Tutor Doctor takes a smarter approach to tutoring by matching students based on personality and learning style, rather than just assigning instructors at random.

Their “Tutor Match Guarantee” is a huge confidence booster because it ensures your child actually connects with the person teaching them.

They also go deeper than just helping with homework. Instructors emphasize executive functioning skills, like organizing notes and managing time, which help students succeed long-term.

I also really like that families start with a free consultation to map out a customized plan before committing a dime. You can choose between in-home or online sessions, which are super flexible.

The only thing for parents who prefer a hands-on selection to note is the process. You can’t browse a directory and pick someone yourself; Tutor Doctor handles the matching for you.

But honestly, given their track record, it’s worth trusting their process.

Pros

  • Guaranteed tutor compatibility
  • Teaches time management skills
  • In-home and online options
  • Free initial consultation

Cons

  • No direct tutor selection by the parent

Kumon is built around a self-learning approach that develops discipline, focus, and strong academic foundations. Through Kumon Connect, the program transfers its traditional paper worksheets to a tablet, making it possible for parents and instructors to monitor student progress in real time.

The structured, step-by-step system encourages learners to master each concept thoroughly, often helping them move ahead of their current grade level.

I recently visited a Kumon center to observe the tablet-based setup firsthand. The instant feedback keeps students motivated, while independent problem-solving builds confidence and self-reliance.

However, families should consider the ongoing monthly tuition per subject, along with registration and material fees, which may become costly when enrolling multiple children.

Pros

  • Digital worksheets via tablet
  • Builds independent study habits
  • Individualized study plans
  • Transparent pricing online

Cons

  • Recurring monthly tuition fees

Huntington Learning Center is recognized for its rigorous test preparation and specialized academic support.

While it operates under a national brand, the center is locally owned by a husband-and-wife team, which helps create a welcoming, community-oriented environment.

They offer focused programs for students with ADHD, supporting learners who may struggle in traditional classroom settings.

On top of that, the center uses a data-driven approach that is especially effective for high-stakes exams like the SAT and ACT by identifying specific areas where students lose points.

Huntington also accepts Education Scholarship Accounts, making services more accessible for eligible families.

One limitation is scheduling, as the center is closed on Fridays and Sundays, which can be difficult for busy high school students.

Pros

  • Accepts ESA payments
  • Extensive test prep (SAT/ACT)
  • Certified teaching staff

Cons

  • Closed on Fridays and Sundays

Wonderful staff, clean facility, and the program works

Wonderful staff, clean facility, and the program works. We tried other tutoring services before, but nothing has worked liked Huntington. In less than 3 months I can see significant progression. If you are on the fence just do it, you won’t regret it.

The Huntington staff went out of their way to fit our wacky schedule

My son went to Huntington Learning Center for one-on-one SAT prep. The Huntington staff went out of their way to fit our wacky schedule. His got the SAT score he needed (up 100 points from the practice test), and the math tutors helped him with calculus when he was on a tough unit. While he might have been able to do the SAT review on his own, it was well worth the money to keep his studying on track, and the calculus help was invaluable.

My son’s grades has improved

My son likes too go, I feel he is safe while he is there. There is a reward system for the children by points, which helps them learn also in many different ways. His grades has improved since he first started going to Sylvan South.

My youngest test better at the beginning of the school year

My youngest had regressed in reading over a summer and had worked all year to get caught back up to her peers. We sent her to Sylvan over last summer to keep her from going backwards again over the summer. Not only did she test better at the beginning of the school year, she is now one of the best in her class. She made honor roll 1st term this year.

5. Mathnasium

Address: 365 W 116th St #130, Carmel
Contact: +1 317-846-6284
Schedule: Mon – Thu: 10 AM – 3 PM

Last, but definitely not least, Mathnasium is dedicated solely to mathematics, using the proprietary “Mathnasium Method” to help students truly understand concepts.

This approach blends mental, verbal, and hands-on techniques so lessons are easier to grasp and retain.

The center maintains a low-pressure atmosphere, reinforced by a reward system that encourages children to finish their worksheets.

I spoke with a parent whose daughter attends regularly, and she’s so happy her child now eagerly asks to go because she wants to earn more prizes. That positive change in motivation is significant.

Mathnasium also allows drop-in sessions, offering helpful flexibility.

However, instructional hours are limited, with no classes on Fridays and relatively narrow afternoon time slots on weekdays.

Pros

  • Specialized math-only focus
  • Flexible drop-in attendance
  • Reward system motivates kids
  • No long-term contracts

Cons

  • Limited daily instructional hours

The culture at the center is warm and loving

I cannot give enough praise to the Mathnasium curriculum and the staff. My children have been going to Mathnasium for almost a year and their confidence in Math has improved immensely and their grades have followed suit. Most importantly, the culture at the center is warm and loving. My kids are always greeted with big smiles and encouragement. My son actually says that Math is his favorite subject now!

My daughter had a great experience!

My daughter had a great experience! She is young for her class and every year kept falling farther and farther behind in math. I tried to help, but I realized that we needed something more. Mathnasium was just what we needed! They helped her to enjoy math. They made it . She left with a prize practically every single time. We had to stop because she’s in sports, but she wants to go back as soon as the sports season is over. I am a teacher. Anytime one of my students falls behind in math, I confidently recommend Mathnasium!
