Indianapolis Singing Lessons Our Local Music Pros Love

We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.
  • Instructor Credentials: I looked for coaches who preferably had verified university degrees or significant professional experience. This ensures you are learning from someone who truly understands vocal anatomy and performance.
  • Student Success Stories: I prioritized studios with a track record of students landing roles, passing auditions, or hitting milestones. Real-world results are the best indicator of a teacher's effectiveness.
  • Facility and Equipment: A great studio needs more than just a piano; it needs a space that inspires. I assessed the quality of recording gear, stage setups, and practice environments.
  • Curriculum Flexibility: Not everyone wants to sing opera, so I sought out places that tailor their methods to your favorite genres. A good coach should be able to pivot from Broadway to Brit-pop effortlessly.
  • Community and Performance Ops: Learning in a vacuum is tough, so I favored studios that offer recitals or networking events. These opportunities help build the confidence necessary for actual performance.

Finding your true vocal potential starts with a simple breath, but the right guidance turns that breath into a masterpiece. In a city as musically rich as Indianapolis, the options for vocal training are as diverse as the genres on the radio.

Beginners leave the “shower singer” label behind, while established artists fine-tune their sets for upcoming recording sessions. I have spent time exploring various studios across the metro area to see which ones actually deliver on their promises of pitch perfection and stage presence.

Tech-heavy pop labs and family-friendly academies both thrive here. These spots represent the gold standard for vocal growth in the Circle City.

How much does a singing lesson cost in Indianapolis?

If you are looking to start lessons, the good news is that Indianapolis is quite affordable compared to coastal cities.

Most private sessions in the area hover around $30 for a solid 45-minute or hour-long block, making it easy to fit into a weekly budget.

You might find specialized “artist development” hubs charging more for their high-end recording gear or industry connections.

However, for a standard local pro, you are generally looking at the price of a nice dinner out for a one-on-one session that can change your entire performance.

1. VoxTape Studios

voxtape-studios

Website: https://voxtapestudios.com/
Address: 2526 Alabama St
Contact: +1 805-468-5315 / [email protected]
Hours:

  • Mon–Tue 10 AM–9 PM
  • Wed–Thu 10 AM–9 PM
  • Fri 10 AM–7 PM

VoxTape Studios is the place to be if you want to sound like the artists currently topping the Spotify charts. They focus entirely on contemporary styles like Pop and R&B, ditching the rigid classical stuff for a method they call “effortless singing.”

I really love how they use a pop song exercises library to teach things like riffs and belting using songs you actually know and love.

During my time with their resources, I found their “The Green Room” membership to be a total game-changer for daily practice.

The coaches instruct you on vocal mechanics while simultaneously building your artist brand. One friend who takes lessons here mentioned that her range expanded by four notes in just two months of following their specific tension-release drills.

That said, it is a very digital-forward environment, so it might feel a bit modern for someone used to old-school sheet music.

Pros

  • Specialized pop and contemporary focus
  • Hybrid in-person and online learning
  • Massive library of modern song drills
  • Emphasis on artist branding and image

Cons

  • Not ideal for classical opera training
  • High demand creates limited availability
  • Very heavy reliance on digital tools
  • Founder sessions have a long waitlist

Very knowledgeable and is good at imparting that knowledge

I’ve been taking lessons from Lara for about 4 months.  I’m so glad I found her!  As others have said, she is a wonderful voice coach.  She is very knowledgeable and is good at imparting that knowledge.   She is also fun, enthusiastic, inspirational and caring.  I feel very comfortable with her–she creates a safe space to do  vocal exercises  and sing songs that are quite challenging for me.  I highly recommend her!

If you train with Lara you will be blessed!

Lara is a truly gifted teacher with an amazing ear and eye for detail!  Not only did she help me improve my power and range vocally, she also helped me with bringing my original songs to life with songwriting coaching.  My music is reaching more people in meaningful ways because of her.  If you train with Lara you will be blessed!

2. Indianapolis Music Academy

Website: https://www.indylessons.com/
Address: 5703 S East St Suite F
Contact: +1 317-719-7020
Hours:

  • Mon–Fri 3–8 PM
  • Sat 11 AM–5 PM

The Indianapolis Music Academy is easily the most family-friendly option on this list, offering a professional yet incredibly fun atmosphere.

What makes them different is their Achievement & Rewards Program, where students earn trophies and wristbands as they level up.

It is a brilliant way to keep younger singers motivated when the technical drills get a bit repetitive. I visited the studio last month and was impressed by how they coordinate sibling lessons.

You can also have one child in voice and another on drums at the same time, which is a massive time-saver for busy parents whose kids have different musical interests.

More importantly, their faculty is highly qualified, with many holding university music degrees and decades of professional experience.

As a given, they do have a very structured approach, which might feel a bit too much like school for adults who just want a casual hobby.

And because they are so popular with the after-school crowd, the 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM slots are almost always booked solid.

Pros

  • Exclusive trophy and rewards program
  • Month-to-month billing with no contracts
  • All-inclusive studio instrument use
  • Highly qualified university-trained faculty

Cons

  • Prime after-school slots fill up fast
  • Structure may feel rigid for casual adults
  • Closed on Sundays for weekend lessons
  • Busy lobby during peak afternoon hours

Truly a one-of-a-kind

My sister and I have taken lessons for 6 years, and I wouldn’t dream of going anywhere else. We’ve found a family here, one that we can chat, jam out, and laugh with. Mr. Mike is a fantastic teacher and always makes his students smile. Indy Music Academy has a very relaxed, open atmosphere and environment while still pushing us students to work our hardest and perform our very best during performances. It’s truly a one-of-a-kind.

The staff are very experienced

I own a guitar repair and sales shop on the southside and met Mike (the owner of Indianapolis Music Academy) there almost 10 years ago. I know that he and his staff are very experienced and well suited to give musical instruction for a variety of instruments and styles. I recommend the Indianapolis Music Academy to all of my customers who inquire about lessons.

3. Ballard Music Studio

Website: https://www.ballardmusicstudio.com/
Address: 4525 Ashwood Dr
Contact: +1 765-702-6586 / [email protected]
Hours: Tue–Sat 9 AM–7 PM

Ballard Music Studio is where technical skill meets modern music production. They stand out because they integrate recording and music technology directly into their vocal lessons.

This is huge for students who want to hear exactly how their voice sounds through a professional microphone and learn the basics of studio etiquette.

On top of that, the studio also has a very creative, songwriting-heavy track that encourages students to arrange their own original material.

I spoke with a student who had just finished recording a demo there, and the quality was surprisingly radio-ready. It is a fantastic home for anyone looking to bridge the gap between singing for fun and actually releasing music.

Since they lean so heavily into the contemporary and technical side, those looking for traditional conservatory-style classical training might find it a bit too tech-focused.

The personalized nature of the instruction also means the rates can be a bit more “premium” than a standard neighborhood tutor.

Pros

  • Integrated recording and production training
  • Emphasis on original songwriting and arranging
  • Professional-grade studio equipment
  • Tailored plans for individual artist goals

Cons

  • Less focus on traditional classical rigor
  • Higher price point for specialized gear
  • Closed on Mondays and Sundays

I wish I had found Jeff 10 years earlier

I have been with Jeff for 5 years now and have improved dramatically my approach to singing.  I have gained a lot of confidence in my singing in public and have sung notes that when we first started I would not have imagined i would be singing.  I wish I had found Jeff 10 years earlier.

Jeffrey Ballard truly provides exceptional voice training

Jeffrey Ballard truly provides exceptional voice training. I am an older singer who went to Jeffrey a little over 2 years ago.I had experienced voice changes after singing. Jeffrey evaluated my voice and has tailored lessons to meet my needs. He also makes lessons fun. My vocal range has improved, singing is so much more enjoyable and if I am faced with a challenge in a piece I have the tools to meet the challenge. I highly recommend Dr. Ballard to anyone who wishes to improve their voice, maintain vocal health and enjoy the process!

4. Coach Blair’s Voice and Performance Studio

Hours:

  • Mon–Fri 11:30 AM–9:30 PM
  • Sat 10 AM–4 PM

Coach Blair’s studio in Carmel is essentially an artist development hub that focuses on the “limelight” experience.

Singing well in a small room differs vastly from performing with a spotlight in your eyes, and what sets them apart is their dedicated stage with professional lighting, allowing students to practice movement and crowd interaction during their lessons.

I have seen several of Blair’s students perform at local events, and their confidence is always a level above the rest.

The studio provides head-to-toe training that spans vocal technique, beauty pageant preparation, and public speaking.

Blair himself has an active international career, so he is teaching from current, real-world experience rather than just theory.

But this high-level mentorship comes with a higher investment, and the studio is definitely geared more toward those who want to be in the spotlight rather than classical-style singers.

Pros

  • Professional stage with studio lighting
  • Real-world performance and movement coaching
  • Add-on services like original music creation
  • Direct mentorship from a touring artist

Cons

  • Higher investment than standard tutors
  • Very focused on the entertainment industry
  • Location in Carmel may be a commute

Coach Blair is the best in the business!

Coach Blair is the best in the business!  My two daughters have been taking vocal and performance lessons from Coach Blair for over a year now and they both have improved and grown so much. He has helped them both with their vocal technique and performance. But he is much more than just a vocal coach, he is also their mentor and advocate. We are so glad we found Coach Blair!

My experience has been excellent

I have been a student with Coach Blair for 2 years.  My experience has been excellent.  Coach Blair has improved my vocal performance, stage presence, and overall confidence with my music.  What I learn from him, I can also apply to my day to day life.  He is always positive and uplifting.  I highly recommend Coach Blair!.

5. T.O.L. STUDIOS

t-o-l-studios

Website: https://www.tolstudios.com/
Address: 1077 Lovers Ln, Greenwood
Contact: +1 317-709-4330 / [email protected]
Hours: Mon–Fri 12–9 PM

T.O.L. STUDIOS in Greenwood is a modern alternative for the digital age of music.

They function as a working commercial facility, giving students the chance to train on the same high-end gear used for professional label releases.

They’re like the intersection of vocal technical skill and digital entrepreneurship, helping you navigate the actual business side of music.

Their mentorship also includes beat-making, vocal production, and podcasting guidance alongside standard vocal training. I love that students leave their sessions with finished, radio-ready assets for their portfolios.

However, because it is a working studio, you do have to be flexible with your scheduling to work around professional recording sessions.

Plus, it’s a very urban, production-focused vibe, so it might not appeal to someone looking for a quiet, traditional academic music environment.

Pros

  • Training on professional commercial equipment
  • Mentorship on branding and songwriting
  • Focus on creating radio-ready finished assets
  • Direct connection to the local music scene

Cons

  • Scheduling varies based on studio sessions
  • Not suitable for academic/classical paths
  • Closed on weekends for public lessons

So well-rounded in all things music

My teen has been taking drum lessons from Doug for a few years now and I have nothing but positive things to say. He is patient and so well rounded in all things music. Doug not only knows the music my daughter has chosen to learn, but is able to talk about the band members and facts about the band.

We have had an exceptional experience

We have had an exceptional experience with Doug as our daughter’s guitar teacher. Their patience and kindness create a nurturing environment that has allowed our daughter to thrive musically. Doug tailors lessons to her skill level, encouraging progress while keeping learning enjoyable. We highly recommend Doug to anyone seeking a supportive and skilled guitar instructor.
