5 Best Tattoo Shops in Indianapolis for Custom Ink & Quality Work

We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

Artist Expertise and Style: We checked for a deep roster of talented artists who specialize in specific genres. This ensures you can find a pro for everything from traditional to realism.

Cleanliness and Safety: We looked at the studio standards for sterilization and medical-grade hygiene. Feeling safe in the chair is the most important part of the entire experience.

Client Experience and Inclusivity: We prioritized shops that create a welcoming environment for everyone. A good tattoo shop should feel like a safe space where your ideas are respected.

Technical Longevity: We assessed how well the work ages by looking at healed portfolios and technical precision. You want a tattoo that looks just as good ten years down the road.

Getting a new tattoo is a big deal. First-timers face a learning curve, while veterans carefully plan out their next sleeve addition.

Indianapolis has a really vibrant arts scene, and the local tattoo culture is a huge part of that.

I have spent a lot of time exploring the different neighborhoods to find the spots that really stand out. Downtown features high-end gallery spaces, while the east side hides cozy private studios catering to highly specific aesthetics.

It is all about finding that perfect match between your vision and the artist’s specific hand.

In this guide, I will walk you through the top shops that make the city a destination for great ink.

How much does a Tattoo cost in Indianapolis?

Budgeting for a tattoo here usually starts with a shop minimum of around $50 to $100 for those tiny, simple pieces. If you are looking for something custom or larger, expect to pay an hourly rate between $125 and $200. A standard 3-inch tattoo might run you $100 to $250 depending on the detail. For those complex, multi-session masterpieces, you could be looking at anywhere from $500 to over $2,000.

1. MASTERWORK TATTOO

Address: 44 Virginia Ave
Contacts: +1 (317) 384-8887
Hours: Monday – Sunday: 12–8 PM

When you are looking for a tattoo that truly stands the test of time, it helps to find a studio that treats the craft like fine art.

Masterwork Tattoo focuses on technical precision and creating designs meant to look incredible for decades. Their award-winning artists are masters of traditional and illustrative styles that age beautifully.

When I dropped by to chat with the team, the sterile, gallery-like atmosphere immediately stood out. The place was polished and medical-grade clean, giving me the impression that I’m pretty much in good hands here.

More importantly, instead of just pulling flash art off the wall, they prioritize custom pieces that naturally flow with your anatomy.

The only catch is that the waitlist can be pretty long. It’s definitely a premium experience with pricing to match, but when you’re investing in lifelong art, I think it’s definitely worth the wait.

Pros

  • Elite technical precision
  • Sterile gallery atmosphere
  • Custom anatomical designs
  • Specialized style mastery

Cons

  • Months-long waitlists
  • Premium pricing structure
  • Limited walk-in slots

10/10 experience!
10/10 experience! My friend and I called for walk in appointments, and Reuben was able to fit us in last minute. He was so accommodating and worked with both of us until we were happy with our designs. He was really careful to make sure we were comfortable and beyond that, he’s an amazing and talented  artist and a really cool guy! I definitely recommend this place and Reuben specifically if he can get you in!

The lines are clean, the tattoo is beautiful
Went here for my first tattoo and I definitely recommend!! Andrea was the artist and I absolutely recommend going to them. The lines are clean, the tattoo is beautiful, and I felt comfortable the entire time. I plan on coming here with my future tattoos. 10/10!

2. Steel Rod Tattoo

Address: 3436 W 16th St
Contacts: +1 (317) 297-8335
Hours: Tuesday – Saturday: 12–9 PM

While some shops rely on flash and hype, Steel Rod Tattoo wins you over with pure craftsmanship and an easygoing vibe. It has the soul of a classic street shop, but the technical precision behind the work is serious.

As a veteran-owned business, they prioritize inclusivity, creating an incredibly welcoming and safe space for everyone, including the LGBTQ+ community.

That relaxed energy is exactly what you want, especially if you’re a first-timer feeling a little nervous.

But more importantly, they really shine when it comes to freehand work and fully custom, fairly priced designs.

I’ve seen some of their gaming-inspired pieces, and the bold color saturation is just mind-blowing.

The storefront might look simple from the outside, but the ink speaks for itself. Justkeep in mind that they stay super busy, so getting a quote usually requires an in-person consultation.

Pros

  • Exceptional custom value
  • Inclusive safe-space culture
  • Veteran-owned professionalism
  • Versatile style range

Cons

  • Hard to get phone quotes
  • Busy high-traffic shop
  • Simple exterior appearance

My artist was Maria and she’s amazing!
If you want good quality work this is the place to go! I plan to go back for my next sleeve! My artist was Maria and she’s amazing! (The love yourself and rose tattoo at the top of my shoulder is not her work she did touch up the love yourself)

I found this hidden gem and have had the best experience ever
I have been to multiple places to get a tattoo. I found this hidden gem and have had the best experience ever. The shop has one of the best art I have seen. Also, Cisco took very good care of me. He was mindful of the session and worked accordingly with my pain levels. Also, was very courteous. The tattoo turned out to be the best 1 on me. Check them out!

If you are a fan of bold lines, heavy black shading, and classic Americana designs, Fountain Square Tattoo absolutely needs to be on your radar.

Sitting right in the heart of the arts district, they’ve built a rock-solid reputation for staying incredibly true to the roots of traditional tattooing.

The shop features an open floor plan that gives the space a highly authentic, social feel, perfectly matching the lively neighborhood vibe outside.

It’s hands-down one of the best spots in Indianapolis for walk-ins, especially if you’re itching for a timeless piece like a traditional rose, dagger, or eagle.

The staff is genuinely friendly, going out of their way to make both nervous first-timers and heavily tattooed collectors feel right at home. Just remember that their passion is firmly rooted in traditional work, so hyper-realism isn’t really their jam.

Pros

5. Pushininkinc

pushininkinc

Website: http://www.pushininkinc.com/
Address: 10202 E Washington St suite 612
Contacts: +1 (317) 332-9971
Hours

Monday – Saturday: 11 AM–8 PM

Sunday: 11 AM–6 PM

For anyone who prefers a calm and private setting, Pushininkinc offers a much more intimate experience than larger shops.

They specialize in small-scale precision, nailing high-detail black and grey illustrative pieces and flawless fine-line lettering.

Walking into the studio, you’ll immediately notice the minimalist, exceptionally clean space that highlights their strict attention to professional hygiene. But what really blew me away is how beautifully their work heals.

Looking through their healed portfolio, the smooth shading and incredibly crisp lines hold up perfectly over time. The whole design process is deeply collaborative, giving you plenty of one-on-one time to tweak and refine your ideas.

But because of this dedicated approach, you won’t find much room for spontaneity here. The wait times can be long, and walk-ins are rare, so you’ll definitely need to plan ahead and book your appointment well in advance.

Pros

  • Intricate fine-line detail
  • Private one-on-one focus
  • Minimalist professional space
  • Collaborative design process

Cons

  • Long booking lead times
