5 Spots in Indianapolis for the Best Fish and Chips

We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

Authenticity and Preparation: We looked for venues that prioritize traditional battering and frying methods for their seafood. Establishing a true British-style flavor profile was a major factor in our evaluation.

Ingredient Quality and Sourcing: High-quality, flaky fish that does not dry out during the cooking process is absolutely essential. We favored establishments that emphasize freshness and sustainable, transparent maritime sourcing.

Value and Portion Sizes: A great meal should leave you feeling comfortably full without completely emptying your wallet. We compared the sheer volume of food provided against the menu price to ensure fair value.

Dining Atmosphere: The environment plays a huge role in enjoying warm comfort food, whether it is a bustling food hall or a cozy pub. We considered how the seating and overall vibe enhance the meal experience.

Service Reliability: Friendly, efficient staff can make or break any dining experience. We noted customer consensus regarding order accuracy, wait times, and overall hospitality.

Finding the best fish and chips in Indianapolis is harder than it sounds when every menu promises a crisp batter and a big pile of fries.

I wanted places that actually deliver flaky fish, satisfying portions, and the kind of comfort-food feel that makes you reach for the malt vinegar.

Around the city, that can mean a British-style counter in a busy food hall, a tea room with pub classics, or a seafood market cooking fresh cod to order.

I also linked a couple of local food guides, including Indian restaurants and other notable restaurants in Indianapolis, in case you are building out a full dining shortlist.

How much do fish and chips cost in Indianapolis?

A fish and chips meal in Indianapolis usually falls around $10 to over $40, depending on whether you are eating at a casual shack, a pub, or a higher-end seafood restaurant.

Venue TypePrice Range
Seafood Shacks / Casual$10 – $13
Local Pubs$12 – $15
Casual Dining Chains$20.90 – $26
High-End Steak / Seafood$40+

1. The Harbour Fish & Chips

the-harbour-fish-chips

Website: https://www.theharbour1.com/

Address: 906 Carrollton Avenue

Contact: (317) 492-9189

Hours: Monday-Thursday, 11:00 AM – 9:00 PM; Friday-Saturday, 11:00 AM – 10:00 PM; Sunday, 11:00 AM – 8:00 PM

Whenever I want a fish and chips meal that leans closest to a true British pub bite, The Harbour is one of the first places I think of.

Tucked inside the Garage Food Hall, it serves cod, salmon, and catfish with a crisp batter that keeps the fish moist instead of greasy. The portions are massive, by the way, so it feels fair for the price.

I also appreciate that the menu goes beyond the basic plate. You can add a scotch egg, pair your order with a Strongbow or another craft beer like an India pale ale (IPA), and settle into the Bottleworks energy for an easy, casual meal.

Just a heads up: the chips do not always match the fish. On a good day, they’re solid, but on a weaker day, they feel more forgettable. Also, the shared hall setup is not as cozy as a traditional sit-down pub.

Pros

  • Authentic British-style batter
  • Massive portion sizes
  • Located in a popular food hall
  • Expanded British menu options

Cons

  • Chips can be inconsistent
  • Shared seating feels less pub-like

A wee taste of Scotland hit the spot today!

Snagged a scotch egg and the cod n chips. Strongbow to wash it all down. Cod was fantastic! Great seasoning on it. Batter was great and the fish wasn’t dry. Egg was also great. Chips… not much to say about em but they were fine. A wee taste of Scotland hit the spot today! Slainte!

The chips were good too, thick and well fried.

The salmon and chips was great! Really tasty batter and a nice big piece of fish. The chips were good too, thick and well fried. Had a good local IPA to wash it all down. The lobster place across the food hall gets all the rave reviews but my wife’s meal was disappointing. Her lobster was dry and rubbery and the shrimp were uninspired. We both agreed the fish and chips at the Harbor was better!

2. Grill and Fry

Address: 3605 Commercial Dr

Hours: Thursday-Tuesday, 10:30 AM – 8:30 PM

When I want something less traditional but still satisfying, Grill and Fry is the place that I keep returning to. It operates inside Saraga International Grocery, so the setting is casual.

The food here makes a strong case for the detour. I like that you can mix flaky fish, crispy fries, and Korean-style wings into one order without it feeling gimmicky.

Moreover, the combo platters are generous, and the extra sides, like coleslaw and bread, help it feel like a real meal rather than a quick snack. It’s also one of the better value plays in this lineup, especially if you order online.

The downside is the atmosphere. Since it sits in a grocery-store food court, it lacks the charm and comfort of a proper pub or full-service seafood restaurant.

Pros

  • Creative fusion menu options
  • Customizable combo platters
  • Generous, value-driven portions
  • Convenient online ordering

Cons

  • Located in a grocery store food court
  • Limited traditional dine-in atmosphere

Customer Reviews

This is hands down the best fish and chips I’ve ever had.

Absolutely blown away. I’m honestly shocked this place doesn’t have more recognition. This is hands down the best fish and chips I’ve ever had. I’ve had fish and chips everywhere, from the coasts of the UK to the harbors of Australia to classic spots in New England, nothing comes even remotely close to the quality, flavor, and freshness here. I would recommend this place to absolutely everyone AND their mother. If you think you’ve had good fish and chips, think again. You haven’t until you’ve been to the Grill and Fry

The service was quick and friendly with casual dining vibe.

My son and I tried this place, Grill and Fry last weekend for the first time. We both were very impressed with the quality of the food and service they offer. My son ordered the tilapia and I ordered the Korean style wings. The sauce was amazing for the Korean style wings. We really liked the crispness of wings and fish&chips. The portion was great, not too heavy yet not too small. The service was quick and friendly with casual dining vibe. We will definitely go this place again and highly recommend to try this place.

3. Slapfish

slapfish

Website: https://slapfish.net/

Address: 345 Massachusetts Ave

Contact: (317) 686-9713

Hours: Sunday-Thursday, 11:00 AM – 9:00 PM; Friday-Saturday, 11:00 AM – 10:00 PM

Slapfish feels like the most modern pick here, and I mean that in a good way. The menu goes beyond a standard fish-and-chips plate, with lobster rolls, tacos, and lighter options, but the beer-battered fish still holds its own, with a crisp finish and fresh flavor.

I also appreciate the sourcing angle. Their boat-to-plate focus and broader menu make it easier to bring along people who want gluten-free or plant-based options without settling for a boring backup.

That said, it can feel expensive for a fast-casual stop once you start adding sides or extra items. I also found that the experience can get a little uneven when the place is busy, so it isn’t always the smoothest choice for a larger group.

Still, it’s a strong option when you’re craving quality seafood in a lively Mass Ave setting.

Pros

  • Responsibly sourced, fresh seafood
  • Broad, health-conscious menu
  • Modern fast-casual environment
  • High-quality beer batter

Cons

  • Pricier than typical casual spots
  • Can feel disorganized when busy

Servers were friendly

Delicious food! Got the fish and chips with lobster Mac on the side. Fish breading was light and crisp. The Mac had big pieces of lobster. Servers were friendly and answered any of our questions. They also let you customize your food a lot. Water was phenomenal. Atmosphere was nice, liked all the neon signs. Didn’t have to wait for a table. Overall, I highly recommend it.

We’ll definitely be back!

If you love seafood, this is the place for you! Lobster dishes galore! The lobster roll was delicious as were the lobster deviled eggs. Fries are cooked perfectly with crunchy textured outside and smooth and creamy deliciousness inside. Fish and chips was equally delicious and cooked perfectly as well and a very large portion! We’ll definitely be back!

4. Cheeky Bastards Restaurant

Website: https://www.cbindy.com/

Address: 11210 Fall Creek Rd

Contact: (317) 288-9739

Hours: Wednesday-Thursday, 11:00 AM – 8:00 PM; Friday, 11:00 AM – 9:00 PM; Saturday, 8:00 AM – 9:00 PM; Sunday, Special Events Only

Cheeky Bastards Restaurant is the most immersive British-style stop on this list.

Between the tea room setup, cozy dining spaces, and pub classics like mushy peas, it feels like the kind of place you pick when you want the meal to be the whole outing, not just a quick bite.

I really like that the menu stretches beyond fish and chips. Afternoon Tea, warm scones, sausage rolls, and other comfort-food extras give the place more personality than a standard seafood counter.

The fish itself is hearty, and the portions are big enough to share, which helps justify the visit.

I’m just iffy about the pacing here. In particular, the service can move very slowly, and the staff flow can feel a little unorganized when the room fills up, so this isn’t the best choice if you’re hungry and in a hurry.

Pros

  • Highly authentic British recipes
  • Massive, shareable portion sizes
  • Cozy, immersive pub atmosphere
  • Unique Afternoon Tea events

Cons

  • Service can be extremely slow
  • Staff flow can feel unorganized

Great friendly atmosphere

First time here. We’ve been wanting to try this local neighborhood place out for a couple of years and finally went today. We LOVED it. Great friendly atmosphere and really quaint location and decor. Now the food… You will not find better fish and chips anywhere in Indiana. And the chips and curry gravy was amazing. This is a must try!

Very friendly service too.

Largest portion of the best yummiest fish n chips ever ate in my life. Sausage roll & apple cinnamon scone were so so good. Very friendly service too. Will be back to sample  *insert british accent* for beakfast & teas and bangers 👌🏽 🙌

5. Broad Ripple Seafood Market

broad-ripple-seafood-market

Website: https://bardalesseafood.com/

Address: 882 East Coil Street

Contact: (317) 385-9370

Hours: Tuesday-Thursday, 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM; Friday-Sunday, 11:00 AM – 6:30 PM

Broad Ripple Seafood Market works especially well for people who care about what happens before the fish hits the fryer.

Since it doubles as a market and prepared-food counter, the whole place feels rooted in freshness, and the Boston-style fish and chips showcase it with flaky cod and a lighter, crisp batter.

I was also impressed by the supporting pieces here. The house-made tartar sauce, seasoned sides, and access to oysters or fresh fish to take home give the visit more range than a typical quick seafood lunch.

The drawback is that the front-of-house experience does not always feel polished. Orders can be handled a bit clunkily, and the service tone is not as warm as some other picks.

Even so, if you want traceable seafood and high-quality fish, this place is easy to remember.

Pros

  • Exceptionally fresh, traceable seafood
  • Delicious house-made tartar sauce
  • Dual market and restaurant concept
  • Direct relationships with fishermen

Cons

  • Clunky handling of orders
  • Customer service can feel unhelpful

Customer Reviews

Tender and moist, not over cooked and dry.

Had the Boston fish and chips. I thought it was very good. The batter is light and crispy, not heavy and greasy like many places. Fish was great. Tender and moist, not over cooked and dry. Fries were steak fries. Mike was very friendly and helpful. I will definitely go back. Will have to try one of the other things on the menu.

Everything was fresh, flavorful, and cooked perfectly

We had such a great experience at Broad Ripple Seafood Market! Mike was so friendly and made us feel right at home. The service was quick, warm, and personal — you can tell they really care about their customers. We ordered the fish and chips, chowder, and hush puppies, and everything was fresh, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. Definitely one of those local gems we’ll be coming back to again!
