We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

Facility Size and Features: I looked at overall wall space, climbing styles, and whether each gym offered extras like fitness areas or classes. Bigger, better-rounded setups earned stronger marks.

Route Quality and Setting: I paid attention to how fresh the climbing felt from one visit to the next. Gyms with varied difficulty levels and thoughtful route setting stood out.

Community and Instruction: A climbing gym should feel approachable, especially for beginners. I gave more credit to places with helpful staff, solid classes, and a more welcoming atmosphere.

Pricing and Value: I compared day passes, memberships, rentals, and what you actually get for the money. The best picks felt worthwhile without sacrificing the climbing experience.

Finding the right place to train your grip strength and work through new challenges can completely change your fitness routine. If you’re looking for the best rock climbing gym in Indianapolis, the city has strong options for first-time climbers, families, and regulars.

I pulled together local spots with useful training tools, welcoming atmospheres, and enough variety to keep sessions from feeling stale.

Whether you want bouldering, top-rope walls, or a full fitness club with climbing built in, this guide makes the search easier.

1. North Mass Boulder

Website: https://www.northmassboulder.com/

Address: 1411 Roosevelt Ave

Contact: (317) 953-6667 | [email protected]

Hours: Monday-Friday, 5:00 AM – 11:00 PM; Saturday-Sunday, 6:00 AM – 11:00 PM

North Mass Boulder feels like a great fit if your main goal is bouldering power, movement, and community. The converted factory space gives the whole gym a lively energy right away.

I stopped by to get a feel for the 18,000-square-foot setup, and it really does keep you engaged. There is plenty of wall space, so sessions do not feel repetitive too quickly.

Their Tension Board 2 is especially useful if you want more structured training before jumping back on the main walls. The fitness area, classes, cafe, and coworking spaces also make it easy to spend more than an hour here.

The tradeoff is simple. This place focuses entirely on shorter unroped climbing, so it’s not the best pick if you want tall roped routes for endurance work.

Pros

  • Massive 18,000-square-foot bouldering area
  • Includes a specialized Tension Board 2
  • Large fitness center and group studio
  • Built-in cafe and coworking areas

Cons

  • Only offers shorter unroped walls

The place to boulder if you want to meet people.

The place to boulder if you want to meet people. There is a ton of people every weekday evening and still a lot of people during the weekend as well. The membership is slightly expensive ($75/month), but if you attend the yoga and dance classes like me, it is so worth it. Update (4/22/2024): Always a good place to attend the events. There were probably 300+ people climbing and talking.

My favorite climbing gym to visit when I’m home for the holidays.

My favorite climbing gym to visit when I’m home for the holidays. Hands down the best bouldering of any gym I’ve ever been to. At first glance, the number of routes seems a bit low compared to what you might be used to, but I think the sheer amount of wall space balances that out. Every single route, even the ones you know you’ll immediately flash, are genuinely fun and thoughtfully set. The gym was also spotless. Nobody likes climbing a route with nasty, dirty holds. Please keep those efforts up.

2. EPIC Climbing and Fitness

Website: http://climbepic.com/

Address: 1931 Stout Field West Drive

Contact: (317) 247-1931 | [email protected]

Hours: Monday-Friday, 10:00 AM – 10:00 PM; Saturday, 10:00 AM – 8:00 PM; Sunday, 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM

EPIC Climbing and Fitness is one of the more versatile options on this list. It mixes 11 angled bouldering areas with top-rope walls, auto-belay stations, and lead climbing, so it works for a wider range of training goals.

If you’re also comparing other gyms in Indianapolis, this is one of the few places that really covers multiple climbing styles under one roof.

What stood out to me most was how easy it is to build a longer session here. You can warm up on shorter problems, move to tall walls, then finish with yoga or grip strength work without leaving the building.

I also appreciate that solo climbers are not boxed out, since the auto-belay devices make it easier to get vertical mileage without waiting on a partner.

The only real downside is the certification requirement for independent roped climbing. That extra step makes sense for safety, but it can slow down your first visit.

Pros

  • Convenient auto-belay devices
  • 11 angled bouldering areas
  • Dedicated lead climbing sections
  • Yoga and grip strength classes

Cons

  • Certification required for roped sections

This place has kept me coming back for more!

My first rock climbing experience was at Evo Rock Indy and this place has kept me coming back for more! Huge variety of routes for different skills levels, very friendly staff, and overall cleanliness is on point for such a large facility. Definitely recommend going to Evo

We had a class with Kahlea and it was fantastic.

We had a class with Kahlea and it was fantastic. I had never rock climbed before, but within the hour I was feeling confident both on the wall and belaying. The gym itself is huge and has an amazing variety for climbing.

Address: 9850 Mayflower Park Drive

Contact: (317) 802-9302 | [email protected]

Hours: Monday-Tuesday, Thursday-Friday, 11:00 AM – 10:00 PM; Wednesday, 7:00 AM – 10:00 PM; Saturday-Sunday, 9:00 AM – 10:00 PM

Hoosier Heights Indianapolis feels built for climbers who want variety without losing the training side of things.

It combines interactive training walls, roped climbing, auto-belays, and a fitness area, so it gives you room to work on both technique and endurance.

I like that it also works well for families. Youth programs are a big plus, and children six and under can climb for free, which is not something every gym offers.

If you like pairing hard sessions with recovery work, you can also explore reflexology specialists in Indianapolis after a long day on the wall.

The main drawback is crowding. Popular routes can get busy during peak evening hours, so the experience feels much smoother when you come during off-peak hours.

Pros

  • Interactive training boards
  • Helpful auto-belay systems
  • Dedicated fitness center and activity room
  • Free climbing for children six and under

Cons

  • Gets crowded during peak evenings

It was perfect.

This was my first experience indoor rock climbing and it was perfect. Hoosier Heights is fun for people interested in climbing and great for all skill levels! The space is clean, atmosphere is open but inviting, and the staff are helpful. I cannot wait to return and bring more friends!

Our new favorite indoor rock climbing location!

Really great place, loads of options for climbing, super nice, knowledgeable staff who genuinely care about climbing and helping others gain more knowledge. Birthday party crew (esp. lead – Reese) was fantastic handling 20 wild 7yr old climbers. Love the large private space for birthday party climbing. Our new favorite indoor rock climbing location!

Address: 8750 Corporation Dr

Contact: (317) 596-3335 | [email protected]

Hours: Monday-Friday, 11:00 AM – 10:00 PM; Saturday, 9:00 AM – 10:00 PM; Sunday, 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM (members only), 11:00 AM – 10:00 PM

Climb Time Indy has the kind of old-school, community feel that makes a gym easy to come back to. It has been around since 1997, and that long history shows in the confidence of the staff and the range of climbers it attracts.

When I brought a first-timer here, the rental process felt easy and welcoming, which matters a lot if someone is already nervous about trying indoor climbing.

The routes cover a solid mix of difficulty levels, so beginners and stronger climbers can both stay engaged.

I was impressed by the rotating sets, private lessons, youth programs, and dedicated lead walls. There’s plenty here for casual sessions and more focused training.

The catch is the Sunday schedule. Non-members have to wait until 11:00 AM, so early access is more limited than at some other spots.

Pros

  • Wide range of difficulty levels
  • Comprehensive rental gear for beginners
  • Private lessons and youth programs
  • Dedicated lead route wall

Cons

  • Non-members cannot access the gym early on Sundays

#1 place in Indy to get Strong for rock climbing.

#1 place in Indy to get Strong for rock climbing. They have the largest quantity of steep bouldering/climbing wall angles. Climbing at CTI builds POWER, core strength, and an understanding of how to limit boulder/project not offered anywhere else in the city. I have improved as a climber thanks to Climb Time Indy.

This place is really awesome for indoor rock climbing.

This place is really awesome for indoor rock climbing. They have a mix of different difficulties. Its definitely a work out and can challenge any level if climber. I set up a bachlor party for my friend at climb time and we had a really good time only 15 dollars for an all day pass!

5. Life Time

Website: https://www.lifetime.life/locations/in/castle-creek.html

Address: 8705 Castle Creek Parkway East Dr

Contact: (317) 915-3530

Hours: Monday-Friday, 4:00 AM – 12:00 AM; Saturday-Sunday, 6:00 AM – 9:00 PM

Life Time is the most unique option in this lineup because it’s a full luxury health club first and a climbing spot second. That setup works surprisingly well if you want your lifting, cardio, classes, and climbing in one place.

The 30-foot wall gives you real vertical movement, and the auto-belays make solo sessions easier.

There are also low-height bouldering areas, children’s leagues, and complimentary gear during open climbing, which makes the setup feel more convenient for families.

What I appreciate most is how easy it is to turn one visit into a full training day. You can climb, work out, and recover without driving across town.

The drawback is access. You usually need a full membership or a guest pass from a member, so it’s less flexible for casual drop-ins.

Pros

  • 30-foot wall with auto-belays
  • Children’s leagues and curriculum classes
  • Complimentary gear during open sessions
  • Low-height bouldering areas

Cons

  • Requires a full club membership or guest access

Great club.

Great club. It is clean and the employees do a great job of maintaining the equipment. It is step up from other clubs we have joined and the child care is awesome. The kids love the rock climbing, computers and the basketball court. We love the spin classes at this location and fishers. Highly recommend.

My kids and I love this place every time we go.

My kids and I love this place every time we go. Indoor and outdoor pool, rock climbing, huge child area, steam room….etc. what’s not to love, then finish off the day with organic meal and drinks.
