We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

Quality and Taste Profile: We prioritized shops that consistently deliver incredible flavor and texture profiles across their entire menu. It’s crucial that every bite feels fresh, balanced, and crafted with high-quality ingredients.

Menu Variety and Versatility: A top-tier spot needs to cater to different cravings, from simple morning breads to elaborate custom cakes.

We evaluated the breadth of options available to ensure both casual foodies and serious dessert lovers find exactly what they need.

Value and Accessibility: Enjoying a sweet treat shouldn’t always break the bank, so we weighed the price tags against the portion sizes and artisanal effort.

Shops that offer fair, accessible pricing for their level of craftsmanship scored highly on our list.

Atmosphere and Convenience: The physical experience of picking up a pastry matters just as much as the food itself.   We looked closely at customer service, shop charm, and how easy it is to park and grab your goods during a busy morning rush.

Craving a flaky, butter-rich croissant or a perfectly crafted custom cake that practically melts in your mouth?

Finding the best bakeries in Indianapolis is a delicious adventure, whether you’re a dedicated dessert lover, a meticulous event planner, or just a casual foodie hunting for your next morning pastry.

The local baking scene is bursting with oven-fresh goodness that easily rivals the most decadent desserts you would find after a savory dinner at the city’s top Japanese restaurants

And if you need something brought straight to your door, many of these shops also offer exceptional cake delivery options to sweeten your celebrations. Let’s dive right into the flour-dusted magic.

1. Rene’s Bakery Inc

rene-s-bakery-inc

Website: https://www.renesbakeryanddeli.com/

Address: 6524 N. Cornell Ave.

Contact: (317)-251-2253

Hours: Wed-Thu 8am-1pm, Fri-Sat 8am-3pm

Stepping into this cozy neighborhood staple instantly wraps you in the rich, buttery aroma of authentic French-style artisan baking.

Rene’s Bakery Inc has spent over two decades perfecting the delicate art of European pastries right here in the city. Their specialty is meticulously laminated doughs and vibrant macarons.

The perfectly flaky croissants shatter deliciously with every bite, revealing layers of airy, butter-soaked perfection.

However, capturing these fleeting, small-batch delights requires some serious planning on your part.

The shop operates on very limited hours and lacks indoor seating, making it strictly a grab-and-go affair that often comes with a side of parking frustration.

Even so, leaving with a box of their weekly rotating breads or a custom-ordered event cake makes the tight schedule completely worthwhile.

Pros

  • High-quality French-style artisan goods
  • Rotating menu of freshly-baked items
  • Highly reasonable pricing for handcrafted items
  • Long-standing community trust and reputation

Cons

  • No indoor seating available
  • Limited operating hours and tight parking

The service was quick

The pain au chocolate was flaky and divine! The chia pudding was also excellent and for later we got little strawberries and chocolate tart. Everything was fresh and so so good!!! It’s tiny so there was a line outside so be prepared if it’s cold (or hot) but the service was quick and they wait was so worth it!

Variety of fresh bread

If you haven’t tried Rene’s you haven’t tried anything! Rene’s is a good little bakery with only space to order takeout. Their croissants aren’t the usual croissants, it’s syrup flavor and croissant in a wholesome combination! Warm syrupy and delicious in every layer! Rene just was worth the hype! I ordered a brownie too which was chewy fudgy with the right amount of chocolatiness! Service is super quick if you go right after opening! Rene’s serves a variety of fresh bread too and has a good menu ready for you to make a choice.

2. Leviathan Bakehouse

leviathan-bakehouse

Website: https://www.leviathanbakehouse.com/

Address: 1101 N. COLLEGE AVE.

Contact: (317) 493-1879

Hours: Tue-Sun 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM

Finding a loaf of bread that crackles fiercely on the outside while remaining cloud-soft inside is a revelation. That craft-driven, zero-shortcut philosophy is the heartbeat here.

Rooted deeply in natural fermentation and elevated pastry techniques, Leviathan Bakehouse transforms locally sourced grains into hearth-fired sourdoughs and globally inspired breakfast treats.

I recently stopped by to grab one of their specialty morning sandwiches, and the sheer quality of the in-house baked bread instantly ruined standard grocery store loaves for me.

The incredible talent of the fine-dining pastry chefs is undeniable, but it naturally draws a heavy crowd into their rather intimate space.

You might find yourself elbow-to-elbow with other patrons during peak brunch rushes, and popular items regularly vanish from the display case well before closing time. Still, securing one of their complex, handmade pastries feels like winning a delicious lottery.

Pros

  • Zero-shortcut handmade baking approach
  • Exceptional sourdough and artisan breads
  • Diverse cafe and pastry menu
  • Warm, community-focused atmosphere

Cons

  • Small space gets easily crowded
  • High-demand items sell out quickly

Service was great.

An amazing bakery with beautiful pastries. The staff are super friendly and polite. Service was great. I tried the LVTHN BLT – the balsamic onion and the bread complimented very well. Coffee was decent. Would highly recommend. There is street parking and parking by the side street.

Coffee and food are good

The porridge loaf is amazing and our favorite loaf in town. The coffee and food are good too, but the real highlight is the bread. Service has always been friendly and efficient. There is plenty of parking on the street nearby.

3. Long’s Bakery

long-s-bakery

Website: https://longsbakery.com/

Address: 1453 N Tremont St

Contact: 317-632-3741

Hours: 7 days a week, 5:30 am – 10:00 pm

Nothing hits the nostalgic sweet spot quite like a warm, incredibly fluffy glazed yeast donut pulled straight from the fryer.

As a multi-generational, family-owned institution since 1955, Long’s Bakery keeps the city hooked by producing scratch-made, highly affordable traditional pastries continuously throughout the day.

The aroma of sugary dough hits you the moment you pull up to this beloved local landmark.

While the rock-bottom prices and extended daily hours are a massive draw, you should definitely prepare to stand in line for these legendary treats.

The old-school charm also means they stick to a strict cash-only policy and focus heavily on classic recipes rather than modern, artisanal trends.

Pros

  • Extremely affordable baked goods
  • Fresh donuts are made all day, continuously
  • Decades of consistent, traditional quality
  • Extended daily operating hours

Cons

  • Frequent long lines and wait times
  • Lacks modern or specialty pastry trends

Prices are incredible for how delicious and fresh the donuts are

Love this little shop and I can tell others do too! My first visit and I was brought here by family. The history is so impressive. The prices are incredible for how delicious and fresh the donuts are when they are served. The line wrapped around the store from the minute I entered to when I left. It’s clear it’s a cherished place by everyone!

Cash only – don’t forget and come prepared!

Sometimes it takes a minute to check out, but pack your patience, it’s well worth the wait.

Needs to be experienced at least once in your life

Love this place best donuts and Indy and worth the 30 minute drive. They have a variety of of pastries but the yeast donuts very popular and good. I also enjoy the glazed tigger tales. Which I devoured before this review lol.   Goes great with chocolate milk or any drink of your choosing.  Longs is a generational place that need to be experienced at least once in your life by each generation. People travel from other states just for a taste of Longs. 🥰🥰💜💜

4. Amelia’s Fletcher Place

amelia-s-fletcher-place

Website: https://ameliasbread.com/

Address: 653 Virginia Avenue

Contact: 317.686.1583

Hours: Open 7 days a week 8am – 8pm

Driven by a deep commitment to natural fermentation and old-world, handcrafted techniques, Amelia’s Fletcher Place provides the city with phenomenal hearth-baked loaves and delicate daily pastries.

I grabbed one of their renowned country loaves for a dinner party recently, and the complex, tangy flavor profile completely stole the show from the main course.

Some customers I spoke to said a few baked items can occasionally be a bit too salty, depending on the day’s batch, though.

Despite the undeniable quality and the convenience of being open seven days a week, visiting this specific spot can sometimes be a logistical headache.

Finding decent parking near the bustling avenue is often a frustrating chore. Nevertheless, the sheer variety of their fresh, from-scratch cookies and croissants easily makes up for the brief parking struggle.

Pros

  • Authentic European-style sourdough
  • From-scratch daily production
  • Multiple locations with consistent hours
  • Wide variety of artisan breads and pastries

Cons

  • Difficult parking near this location
  • Occasional flavor inconsistencies in certain items

All the goodies you can buy

Thank you Sara and Audra for great service and kindness! I loved the chocolate croissant I got here and the City bread loaf! Thank you Audra for helping coordinate a donation to my Habitat for Humanity Raffle and for Sara for being so helpful always! I appreciate ya’ll so much and love the location and all the goodies you can buy here!

Semolina bread that is so aromatic

This is my favorite bakery in the city for grab and go. They have a great variety of items to pair with their freshly baked breads and pasties. I recommend checking out their sandwich of the day or local spreads and salads that you won’t be able to find anywhere else. Check out the semolina bread that is so aromatic once toasted or the capicola twist.

5. Taylor’s Bakery

taylor-s-bakery

Website: https://taylorsbakeryindy.square.site/

Address: 6216 Allisonville Rd

Contact: (317) 251-9575

Hours: Tue-Sat 7am to 5pm

Boasting over a century of deep local heritage since 1913, Taylor’s Bakery specializes in visually stunning, scratch-made custom cakes and a massive array of traditional party treats.

Their multi-generational family recipe book guarantees that everything from cupcakes to their surprising ice cream selection delivers classic, crowd-pleasing flavors.

Trust me, slicing into one of their beautifully decorated, highly reliable custom tiers remains a sweet, time-honored tradition for countless local families.

While their fast turnaround times for elaborate event orders are a massive relief for stressed planners, the storefront experience isn’t always entirely flawless.

Several patrons have occasionally dealt with rushed or dismissive customer service interactions during busy pickups, and minor order communication hiccups can happen.

Pros

  • Over a century of trusted baking history
  • Excellent custom cakes and event catering
  • Fast turnaround on large custom orders
  • Huge variety of classic sweet treats

Cons

  • Customer service interactions can be inconsistent
  • Occasional order communication issues

Customer service was good

Ordered my daughters cake online and was seamless.  They had it ready for me when I arrived.  It was delicious and she loved it.  Customer service was good and had a nice variety of bakery items available to get.

Stunningly beautiful but also delicious

From start to finish working with Yolanda at Taylors Bakery was a joy. She is the kindest and most knowledgeable person, and she made our daughter and fiancé feel special when selecting a wedding cake. The cake they chose was stunningly beautiful but also delicious. Our guests raved about how good the traditional white wedding cake was. It was even more delicious than the samples! If you like traditional wedding cake, Taylor’s is the bakery to use, and make sure you work with Yolanda. She makes you feel like family!!
