Tomorrow Bookstore on Massachusetts Avenue immediately gives off the feeling of a carefully curated space. It’s filled with international voices and edgy, thought-provoking fiction.
Owners Julia and Jake draw from their South African immigrant background to shape the store’s identity. They fill the shelves with global stories that are rarely found in large chain retailers.
I recently visited to pick up a highly anticipated fantasy romance novel and ended up staying much longer than planned. Sweet Potato, the resident tabby cat who quietly “runs” the floor, had a lot to do with that extended visit.
The bookstore also plays a strong role in the local community. It regularly hosts gatherings that keep readers connected, including groups like the PrideReads club and a steady lineup of author conversations that feel personal and engaging.
The location makes it easy to access, but the hours are somewhat limited. The store closes on Mondays and shuts by 7:00 PM on weekdays.
My favorite bookstore! If they don’t have a book they can order it for you, but they have a great selection for the size of the store. They also have rotating art, book clubs, and host/support community initiatives. I’m happy to have them on the east side!

Tomorrow is not just a bookstore, it’s a community. I can rant so much about the weekly book clubs, an annual membership (with exclusive events and so many discounts!), activities with other local businesses/bookshops and so much more. Julia and Jake are amazing, but did you also know about the bookstore’s cat Sweet Potato?🥹 In summary, Tomorrow is one of my most favorite parts about Indy.

Loudmouth Books stands out as an independent bookstore dedicated to banned literature and authors from historically marginalized backgrounds.
The store was founded by Indianapolis native and bestselling author Leah Johnson. It centers its identity on challenging the idea that diverse stories should be excluded from mainstream shelves
The result is a thoughtfully curated selection that offers a refreshing alternative for readers who want perspectives beyond typical publishing trends.
Its role as a Black, queer, and woman-owned business also adds an important and distinct voice to the local literary scene.
Locals also talk a lot about the community side of things. Kids’ story hours and regular events give the place a warm, welcoming energy that goes beyond shopping for books.
That focus does mean trade-offs, though. You will not find a wide range of mass-market bestsellers or technical manuals here. If that is what you are after, you will likely need another bookstore alongside this one.
LOVE LOVE LOVE the reasons for opening this bookstore!!!! Leah an author herself is very knowledgeable in many different areas, and provides a safe place for all minorities! They are inspired by black history and will gladly guide you to more information on black history or authors who inspire from that! But there is so much more! They were inviting and beautiful souls! Bookmamas sits near the busy Mass Ave cultural district and leans heavily into intentional representation and diversity.
What really sets it apart is how much it relies on conversation instead of data systems. Rather than tracking trends through complex POS systems, the team builds recommendations through real interactions with customers.
The staff takes time to offer highly personalized recommendations, often paired with handwritten reviews that add a genuinely human touch you won’t find at automated online retailers.
There is also a strong community focus here. The store supports local children through a dedicated literacy fund, which ties its day-to-day operations to something bigger than just book sales.
The layout encourages people to stay awhile. It has a welcoming setup that includes a rental space for book clubs and private gatherings.
That said, the hours can be a challenge. The shop typically closes by 6:00 PM, which makes it difficult for commuters to visit after work.
It was super friendly and cozy, had a great selection of books! Found some familiar titles and new ones that instantly got my attention. Love the accessories and trinkets. Calaveras stickers?? ICE whistles??? Let’s go!

Easily the best selection in the area! I truly love all of Indys small bookstores but The Whispering Shelf is the one both my husband and I enjoy. A lot of other shops cater to a certain type of reader (ME!) but TWS has a more diverse selection including a great fantasy and nonfiction section too!

Indiana Literacy & Culture Center Bookstore in Fountain Square is more than just a bookstore. Every purchase directly supports adult education programs and English Language Learner initiatives, making each visit feel tied to a larger community impact.
This non-profit bookstore focuses on beginning-level literacy classes for adults who may not have formal education beyond a sixth-grade level.
We recently attended an author reading here, and the pay-what-you-can model stood out for how it keeps cultural programming open and accessible to everyone.
The organization also runs a workforce development program where adult learners can earn a living wage while gaining experience working at the register.
For parents, they even address a common barrier by offering tutoring for children while adults attend classes.
Selection is more focused, with an emphasis on used materials and carefully curated titles. That means specific academic texts may not always be in stock.
The store itself is also relatively small compared to larger commercial bookstores.

My husband and I are book lovers and collectors. We found the most beautiful copy of Wind in the Willows (vintage) and had to purchase it today. The store attendant was so pleasant to interact with and had several recommendations on where to find readings locally. The store was beautifully decorated (see my photos) and had a great selection of new and used books. We were also able to contribute to literacy when checking out. All in all a great experience. Half Price Books operates on a sustainable circular marketplace model, buying directly from the public to stock a wide range of used and out-of-print items.
With over a hundred locations across the United States, it has grown into America’s largest family-owned bookseller. Their large scale also allows them to keep prices accessible through consistent discounts.
Most pre-loved books and media items are priced at about half the original publisher cost, making it easy to find real value. Clearance sections are especially popular, where items can drop to just a few dollars.
The inventory also goes well beyond paperbacks, including vintage video games, vinyl records, and pop culture collectibles.
That said, the experience is not always as favorable on the selling side. Customers looking to trade in items often mention receiving low cash offers, particularly for common titles.
There are also strict requirements for proof of purchase on newer or shrink-wrapped items, which can be frustrating for some sellers trying to offload recent buys.
A wonderful little shop that is very carefully managed and always seems to have something we’re looking for. We mostly come for DVDs because their selection is excellent and the organization is great but they also obviously excel at books too.
A charming experience that is a refreshing breath of fresh air from a big box store or even some other local buy-and-sell shops where the worker apathy shows throughout. And the prices are great too!
